Adjust the sound quality

With the iTunes equalizer, you can fine-tune specific frequencies of the sound spectrum. You can customize the sound for different genres, rooms in your home, or specific speakers. You can choose from more than 20 presets of the most commonly used equalizer settings, or adjust the settings manually and save your customized settings as a preset that you can use again.

You can also add depth and enliven the quality of your music by adjusting the Sound Enhancer.

Use the iTunes equalizer

  1. Choose Window > Equalizer.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • Choose a preset option from the pop-up menu.

    • Drag the frequency sliders up or down to increase or decrease the volume of a frequency (in decibels).

Click the On checkbox to turn on the iTunes equalizer, choose an equalizer preset from the pop-up menu, adjust the overall volume of frequencies with the pre-amp, move the sliders to adjust the sound level of different frequency ranges

The horizontal values across the bottom of the iTunes equalizer represent the spectrum of human hearing in hertz (Hz). The lower frequencies (starting with 32 Hz) are bass frequencies and the higher frequencies are treble.

The vertical values on each bar represent decibels (dB), units that measure the volume or intensity of each Hz frequency. By moving the sliders (also called faders) up or down, you increase or decrease the sounds that you hear in that frequency range.

Preamp is a secondary volume adjustment applied to all frequencies equally. You might want to increase or decrease the preamp volume when listening to music that was recorded particularly quietly or loudly.

The equalizer’s settings are applied to the currently playing song.
